Ken Kelleher’s Monumental Tommy Toucan Becomes a New Landmark at The Ring Live in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, CHINA — Internationally recognized sculptor Ken Kelleher, also known as Anchorball, has announced the completion, installation or presentation of Tommy Toucan – The Ring, a major project from his expanding international practice.

Commissioned by Hongkong Land for The Ring Live in Shanghai, Tommy Toucan rises eight meters into the cityscape, transforming one of Ken Kelleher's most recognizable characters into a monumental architectural presence.

The sculpture represents a central idea within Kelleher's Luminal Pop practice: that imagination, character and play can possess the same authority, permanence and cultural value traditionally associated with civic monuments. Enlarged to the scale of the surrounding architecture, Tommy is no longer simply a character. He becomes a landmark, a meeting point and an enduring part of the identity of the development.

With his sweeping orange beak, deep blue body and graphic black-and-white features, Tommy has been designed to register immediately from a distance while retaining a strong emotional connection at close range. The clarity of the silhouette allows the sculpture to hold its own against Shanghai's dense architectural environment, while the highly finished surfaces amplify light, colour and movement throughout the day.

At eight meters tall, the work shifts between sculpture, architecture and cultural icon. It gives The Ring Live a distinctive image that can be recognized independently of the buildings around it, creating a visual identity capable of moving through photography, social media, public memory and international culture.

Rather than treating public art as decoration added to a completed space, Tommy Toucan demonstrates how sculpture can become an integral part of placemaking.
